IBM to ship z196 - world's fastest microprocessor

Designed by IBM engineers in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the z196 processor is a four-core chip that contains 1.4 billion transistors on a 512-mm2 surface. The chip was manufactured using IBM's 45-nm SOI processor technology, and offers 60% more capacity than its predecessor, the System z10, while using about the same amount of electricity.
